Freehand Design / Motto of My Work
When Mordechai Vanunu (who spent 18 years in prison for revealing Israels nuclear secrets) was taken to court under heavy guard, he pressed the palm of his hand against the window of the police van transporting him, at the newsmen surrounding the car. With black marker he wrote on his palm the date of his abduction and the place from which he was brought to Israel by Mossad agents information whose publication in Israel was prohibited. Vanunu acted as a visual communicator: he transmitted a direct message to the media in real time. He neither ornamented the message, nor hesitated over what font or color or format to use. He used the materials available to him cleverly and with originality and created a harmony between the message and the manner in which it was transmitted. As a visual communicator, I identify with Vaanunu the graphic designer and with his manner of work.
